Addis Ababa (UNA-OIC) – The African Union has suspended Mali’s membership in response to the military’s seizure of power and the detention of President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta and some members of his government.
The suspension will last until constitutional order is restored, the bloc announced in a tweet on Wednesday, demanding the release of the deposed president and other senior officials.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, the current AU chairperson, called for the “immediate return to civilian rule” in the West African nation.
Keïta said on Tuesday in a televised address, hours after mutinying soldiers detained him and senior members of his government including Prime Minister Boubou Cisse, that the coup leaders had given him no choice but to resign.
