Brazil’s Minister of Mines and Energy Bento Albuquerque said Thursday (9) that Brazil may play a key role helping countries deal with the short-term impact of the pandemic on the bioenergy sector. In his view, the crisis is an opportunity to rebuild, “reducing emissions through intelligent policies and market mechanisms.” The statement was made at the International Energy Agency (IEA) Clean Energy Transitions Summit.
In his address, Albuquerque said that international cooperation is key, and that Brazil, in particular, wants to forge partnerships in the low-carbon hydrogen sector. The minister also listed necessary measures taken by Brazil in tackling COVID-19 in order to prevent the crisis from aggravating by ensuring emergency financial and economic relief. In this connection, he mentioned the support for low-income consumers of up to 220 KWh and a loan for suppliers of up to $5 billion.
Bento Albuquerque said he is finalizing a business model to be presented to prospective partners for the construction of nuclear plants scheduled for the coming years.

Ministers from a number of countries making up a significant sum of the global GDP, energy use, and greenhouse gas emissions took part in the online conference to discuss measures to boost economies, generate employment, reduce global emissions, and make energy systems more resilient.
