ECOWAS renews call for speedy return of democratic institutions in Mali

Niamey (UNA-OIC) – The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) renewed its call for a speedy transfer of power to civilians and the return of democratic institutions in Mali after the army ousted President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta on August 18.

The 15-nation bloc slapped sanctions on Mali after the 18 August coup, including closing borders and banning trade exchange, and has called for elections within 12 months.

“It is our community’s duty to help Malians towards the swift re-establishment of all democratic institutions. The military junta [government] must help us to help Mali,” Niger’s President Mahamadou Issoufou, the bloc’s outgoing chairperson, said at the start of a virtual ECOWAS summit on Monday.
