EU reaffirms determination to contribute to Libya's peace and stability

Brussels (UNA-OIC) – The European Union has underlined its attachment to Libyan sovereignty and independence, and its determination to contribute to the peace and stabilization of Libya at this important juncture.

The EU statement was made on Wednesday following the visit of the High Representative for Foreign Affairs/Vice-President of the European Commission, Josep Borrell, to Tripoli, where he held meetings with Foreign Minister Najla El Mangoush, as well as with Presidential Council President Mohamed Menfi and Vice-President Moussa al Kouni. He also exchanged with UN Special Envoy Ján Kubiš.

Borrell commended the important progress achieved in Libya in the past year, during which a ceasefire was put in place, political institutions unified and a roadmap to the December elections was set up.

He underlined the EU’s firm commitment to continue supporting Libyan authorities in their efforts to approve the necessary legislation and concrete preparations, ahead of the 24 December presidential and parliamentary elections.

The High Representative reiterated the EU’s continuous support to contribute to the implementation of the ceasefire and the withdrawal of all foreign forces and to help the Libyan government in the reform of the security sector, including through the EU Border Assistance Mission (EUBAM).

Borrell also raised ways to increase cooperation with Operation Irini, to keep monitoring the respect of the UN arms embargo with his Libyan interlocutors.
