Head of Sudan Sovereignty Council hails AU's role in addressing African issues

Khartoum (UNA-OIC) – President of Sudan’s Transitional Sovereignty Council (TSC) Lt. Gen. Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan has hailed the role assumed by the African Union (AU) in addressing African issues.

This came when Al-Burhan met here on Sunday with a visiting AU delegation led by African Union Commission (AUC) Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat. The delegation comprises AU Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security Ambassador Bankole Adeoye; Senior Strategic Advisor to the AUC Chairperson Prof. Mohamed El Hacen Ould Lebatt; and Head of AU Office in Khartoum Ambassador Mohamed Belaiche.

The TSC president welcomed AU’s efforts to resolve the crisis of the Renaissance Dam (GERD) and border tensions with neighboring Ethiopia. He affirmed his full confidence in the approaches of the AU for finding African solutions to the African problems, citing the successful efforts of the AU in Libya, the Central African Republic and Chad.

Also during the meeting, Sudanese Foreign Minister Dr. Mariam Al-Sadiq Al-Mahdi presented a thorough briefing to the AU delegation on the crisis of the Renaissance Dam and border tensions with Ethiopia. She reiterated Sudan’s adherence to reaching a binding legal agreement on the filling and operation of the dam.

On his part, AUC Chairperson Moussa Faki underscored that the AU stands by Sudan and supports the transitional government to overcome the current challenges. He called on the transitional period parties to engage in an internal national dialogue on the issues of transition without exclusion.
