Iraqi President Dr. Barham Salih
Baghdad (UNA-OIC) – Iraqi President Dr. Barham Salih on Tuesday welcomed the announcement by Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi, in which he proposed a date for early elections.
In a statement, carried by National Iraq News Agency (NINA), the president affirmed that the call for early, free and fair elections is one of the requirements of the desired political reform, which is a national entitlement arising from the popular movement.
Salih emphasized the importance of serious work to deliver on this government commitment, calling upon the parliament to complement the electoral law as soon as possible, send it to the Presidency of the Republic for approval and implementation. He also called for accelerating the approval of an amendment to the Federal Supreme Court Law, and the provision of the budget and facilities required for the work of the Independent High Electoral Commission, to ensure its independence and safeguard the integrity of the electoral process.
President Salih stressed that holding free and fair early elections requires the cooperation of the United Nations with the Independent High Electoral Commission, as well as the presence of international observers to enable the Commission to play its national role, protect it from interference and strengthen public confidence in the electoral process.
It is noteworthy that Prime Minister Kadhimi announced on July 30 that snap elections would be held on 6 June 2021. He pointed out that the early elections are a priority for his government, which was formed in the wake of mass anti-government protests that erupted in Iraq in October last year.
