Jeddah (UNA-OIC) – The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) participated in the Second UN High-Level Conference of Heads of Counter-Terrorism Agencies of Member States, held virtually on June 28-30 under the theme “Preventing Terrorism in the Age of Transformative Technologies”.

OIC Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian, Social and Cultural Affairs Ambassador Tarig Ali Bakheet said, in a speech he delivered on behalf of the Secretary-General, that the participation in the event falls within the OIC’s constant commitment to the fight against terrorism and violent extremism, stressing the importance the Organization attaches to promoting the values of moderation, tolerance and dialogue.

Bakheet emphasized the numerous initiatives taken by the OIC in combatting terrorism, including the adoption of the 1999 Convention on Combatting International Terrorism, the establishment of various partnerships with international and regional counter-terrorism organizations, such as the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT).

The OIC also established the Sawt Al-Hikma (Voice of Wisdom) Center at the General Secretariat headquarters in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, with the aim of deconstructing extremist rhetoric on social media networks, among other things, he added.

In its drive to stem the rise of Islamophobia in certain parts of the world, the OIC has strongly called for urgent implementation of Human Rights Council (HRC) Resolution 16/18 on “combating intolerance, negative stereotyping and stigmatization of, and discrimination, incitement to violence, and violence against persons based on religion or belief”, as well as other UN resolutions to better address the issue of terrorism in its various forms and manifestations.
