The decision of the Chief Seattle Council of the Boy Scouts to expel 19-year-old Eagle Scout Darell Lambert from the Boy Scouts of America because he does not believe in the adult Santa Claus in the sky raises an important question involving ethics – not to say the morality of its decision.
How can any rational mind who has read the Bible find any basis for using the Biblical god as a model for leading an ethical and moral life. This is the god who murdered Egyptian babies and children because the monarch ruling Egypt would not free slaves to whom that god was partial. Is murdering the innocent because the ruler is evil and corrupt just, moral, ethical and right? (Exodus 11:4-6; 12:29-30).
There are many instances in “Holy Writ” wherein the tribal deity of the Israelites orders mass genocides of people who are defending their homelands against the invading conquering Israelite horde. (Deuteronomy 7:1-2; 20:16-17). Need we cite Joshua, the Heinrich Himmler of Jericho, as another example among many others?
Moreover, we should not forget that the people who murdered some 3,000 human beings at the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center were god-intoxicated fanatics.
Jean Meslier, a French Roman Catholic priest who lived from 1678 to 1733, having repented of his service on behalf of superstition declared in his classic refutation of theism – LE BON SENS (COMMON SENSE):
“…morality and virtue are totally incompatible with the idea of a god, whose ministers and interpreters have painted him in all countries as the most fantastic, the most unjust, and the most cruel of tyrants…”
What a pity that a person of Darell Lambert’s character has fallen victim to the philosophically illiterate Lilliputians running the Chief Seattle Council of the Boy Scouts.
