President Sisi reaffirms Egypt’s support for Libyan government

Cairo (UNA-OIC) – Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi reiterated Egypt’s full support for Libya’s Presidential Council and the Government of National Unity in performing their tasks, leading to holding national elections on December 24, as an essential step on the path to a political settlement of the Libyan crisis.

Sisi made the statement as he met here on Sunday with Libyan Foreign Minister Najla El-Mangoush, in the presence of Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry and Head of the General Intelligence Service Abbas Kamel.

The president emphasized Egypt’s unwavering stance on preserving the unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Libya and the will of its people to choose their leaders. He also underlined that Egypt would continue to support Libya towards holding the elections that reflect the will of the Libyan people.

For her part, El-Mangoush conveyed the greetings of the head of the Libyan Presidential Council and the Prime Minister to President Sisi. She also expressed appreciation of the Egyptian efforts in supporting the peace process in Libya and consolidating the dialogue principles.

Also during the meeting, they reviewed prospects for cooperation between the two countries over the coming period and agreed to follow up on the outcomes of coordination between the Egyptian and Libyan national authorities, as well as to prepare for convening the Higher Joint Egyptian-Libyan Committee.
