Qatar is a reliable international partner of Somalia: Diplomat

New York (UNA-OIC) – Qatar has always been a reliable international partner of Somalia, as it provides the Horn of Africa nation with political support and military aid to strengthen its ability to confront persistent threats and terrorism, Qatar’s Ambassador to the UN stressed.

Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al Thani made the remarks in an event organized by Qatar in partnership with Somalia and the Global Community Engagement and Resilience Fund (GCERF), on the sidelines of the second UN Counter-Terrorism Week (21 to 30 June 2021).

The event, entitled “Facing the new and evolving challenges in the new decade: Through rehabilitation and reintegration in Somalia”, highlights Qatar’s support to Somalia in various fields including security and military assistance as well as development and education to help the country restore its stability and prosperity.

Ambassador Sheikha Alya emphasized support for the GCERF’s mission, which is in line with Qatar’s comprehensive approach to prevent and combat violent extremism and terrorism, and its firm belief in the inevitability of addressing the root causes of violent extremism.

The second UN Counter-Terrorism Week is being held under the theme “Countering and Preventing Terrorism in the Age of Transformative Technologies: Addressing the Challenges of the New Decade”. It features side events that would facilitate discussion of the four pillars of the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy.
