Somali army frees 33 child soldiers from al-Shabaab militia

Mogadishu (UNA-OIC) – The Somali National Army liberated 33 children who were under the custody of the militant group al-Shabaab, in a military operation that took place in the Kuntuwarey district of the southeastern Lower Shabelle region in Somalia on Friday.
The children had been taken forcibly by the al-Qaeda-linked group from their homes in Lower Shabelle, one of the notorious hideouts, for being indoctrinated with terrorist ideologies, the army said, adding that they will be repatriated to their families once they undergo guidance and counseling.
The children were also being trained on handling guns, which runs counter to the child soldier treaty that prohibits the conscription into the military of children under the age of 18.
The operation also resulted in the release of several prisoners from al-Shabaab jail, and dozens of the terrorist group’s militants along with their commanders were killed, while others were detained.
