Somali President, Ethiopian PM discuss enhancing bilateral cooperation

Addis Ababa (UNA-OIC) – Somalia’s President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo held talks with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, on Tuesday in Addis Ababa, where they discussed enhancing bilateral cooperation in regional security, economic growth and development.

The Somali president hailed the Ethiopian people for their participation in the democratic election and congratulated the prime minister on his victory, and wished him every success in his new term.

In his speech at the inauguration ceremony of Ethiopia’s new government, President Farmaajo said that Ethiopia and Somalia have historical bilateral ties and a strong bond of friendship built on mutual respect, strong people-to-people relations, and increasing interdependence.

He affirmed the need for visionary leaders amid the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, terrorism challenges, and existential threats, to resolve these crises.

“Amongst all of today’s difficulties, leaders must offer solutions, hope and deliver results that can drive progress and prosperity for their people and nations. I strongly believe that African leaders when working with the people and for the good of their common future are an unstoppable force,” Farmaajo said.

“The 6th Ethiopian elections result clearly shows that the Ethiopian people have invested their future with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, who has proven to them that he is personally committed to their inclusive development,” he said, stressing that the Ethiopian-Somali friendship will be further strengthened, especial in trade and fighting terrorism.
