Tunisian president, Italy's PM discuss Libyan dialogue and irregular migration

Tunis (UNA-OIC) – The Libyan Political Dialogue Forum (LPDF), scheduled to kick off in Tunisia next week, and the issue of irregular migration were at the center of a telephone conversation on Wednesday between President Kaïs Saïed and Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte.

Conte expressed his “total support” and wished full success to the intra-Libyan dialogue that will take on November 9, the Presidency of the Republic said.

In this context, President Saïed insisted that “the solution in Libya can only be Libyan-Libyan”, pointing out that the restoration of “security and stability in Libya will have a positive impact on the whole region”.

With regard to the issue of irregular migration, the Italian minister noted that his country is facing difficulties in containing the flow of irregular migrants, particularly in the face of the evolution of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In turn, Saïed stressed his determination to put an end to this phenomenon, recalling, in this sense, that the visits he made to the ports of Sfax and Mahdia helped to curb migratory flows to the Italian coasts. He added that “security solutions alone are not enough to solve the problem of irregular migration”, spelling out that the causes of this phenomenon must be addressed, especially the economic and social ones.

The telephone conversation also focused on bilateral relations between Tunisia and Italy as well as ways to strengthen them in all areas.
