UN chief welcomes start of talks to demarcate borders between Lebanon and Israel

Beirut (UNA-OIC) – UN Secretary General António Guterres has welcomed the start of the maritime border demarcation talks between Lebanon and Israel, at the headquarters of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).

“Guterres welcomed the start of negotiations on demarcating the border between Lebanon and Israel, at UNIFIL headquarters, in Naqoura, south of Lebanon,” UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said in a statement, stressing that the world body “is fully committed to supporting the parties in the discussions as they request”.

Early on Wednesday, the first round of the US-mediated negotiations began between the Lebanese and Israeli delegations started under the UN auspices to discuss demarcating the maritime borders between Lebanon and Israel. The two sides agreed to hold the second round of the indirect negotiations on 28 October.
