UN envoy calls for peaceful and inclusive elections Côte d'Ivoire

Abidjan (UNA-OIC) – UN Special Representative for West Africa and the Sahel Dr. Mohamed Ibn Chambas called for the forthcoming October 31 presidential elections in Côte d’Ivoire to be peaceful and inclusive.

As he wound up his week-long visit to Côte d’Ivoire, Ibn Chambas renewed his call to all actors to ensure a peaceful and inclusive election and respect human rights, according to a statement issued on Sunday at the end of the UN envoy’s mission to the West African nation.

It is noteworthy that the special envoy, who also serves as the head of the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS), had begun his visit to Côte d’Ivoire on September 21, as part of the UN support for the organization of a peaceful, inclusive, transparent and credible presidential election.

During his trip, Ibn Chambas met with Ivorian President Alassane Ouattara, and had a series of meetings with members of the government, political actors, representatives of the civil society, representatives of the diplomatic corps, as well as the UN country team.
