UNA, Petra conclude workshop on 'Translation of Arabic-English-Arabic news'

Jeddah (UNA-OIC) – The four-day regional virtual workshop on “Translation of Arabic-English-Arabic news”, organized by the Union of OIC News Agencies (UNA), in cooperation with Jordan News Agency (Petra), concluded Thursday.

The workshop was administered by Jordanian translation expert Enas Swaiss. On the first day of the workshop, she addressed the theoretical framework to determine the nature of the work and tasks of journalists working in the English news sections, as well as the boundaries between a journalist and a news translator.

On the second day. Ms. Swaiss reviewed the ways of writing compelling headlines and leading paragraphs for news articles. The participants shared practical models of news items from their agencies. The third day of the workshop focused on translating economic news, where the trainees were asked to review typical economic news for errors if any. The fourth and last day was devoted to translating coverage of crimes in general and economic crimes in particular.

Participants in the workshop comprised English news editors from the official news agencies of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Jordan, Azerbaijan, Somalia, Egypt, Tunisia, and Yemen.

The workshop was opened by UNA Acting Director-General Ahmad Al-Qarni, who valued the participation of the Union’s member agencies and their interaction with the workshop, which aimed at providing the participants with the skills and capabilities necessary for professional translation of news items and reports.

The workshop falls within the outcome of the Union’s Virtual Media Forum held on 16 May 2020, under the patronage of Saudi Acting Media Minister, Chairman of the UNA Executive Council Dr. Majid bin Abdullah Al-Qasabi, which saw the launch of the Union’s Training Program that aims to develop the capabilities of 2,200 media workers in the OIC Member States.

Director-General of Jordan News Agency Fayeq Hijazin affirmed Petra’s keenness to seize the opportunity of the meeting platform through UNA to share experiences and exchange them for the benefit of all participants in the workshop.
